(Name) waited patiently outside for the world meeting to come to a conclusion. She was mainly waiting for her best friend, Russia, since she was planning on spending the day with him. She couldn’t exactly be inside the meeting room since she wasn’t a nation, or at least a maid working inside the building. At least the meeting would be over soon, at least she hoped so. Nothings was ever really accomplished unless Germany intervened and made sure everyone started discussing their issues.

After a while, everyone started to leave the conference building and go home, all except Russia who went to (Name) as soon as he got out. “Hi Ivan,” (Name) said him. Besides his sisters, (Name) was really the only one who called him by his human name and he actually enjoyed it when she called him by that name.

“Алло (Name),” Russia said after joining up with her. “Are you ready to go?”

(Name) nodded and reached for Russia’s hand. It was normal for them to hold hands whenever they were together, at least to her. They were best friends after all, wasn’t that what best friends do? Honestly, it felt a little strange to Russia, but in a good way. She was always so nice to him, but it made him kind of sad that she was one of the only ones who cared about him like this. Though the hand holding did almost give off the impression that they were dating. They might be by now if Russia had the courage to confess his feelings to her, but he was afraid that she would reject him and wouldn’t want to be his friend anymore.

(Name) smiled up at him, the smile he never got tired of seeing. “I’m ready to go if you are,” she said to him. He would do anything to spend some time with her, even if it was just a stroll around town and going out to eat. It did sound more like a date, but it was just  hanging out to them. He didn’t mind so much though. He would still be around her for some time, so he couldn’t really complain.

(Name) walked with him to town, still holding Russia’s hand in her own. She always looked forward to when she could spend some time with him. He was usually busy with his work and the world conference meetings, so she would just like to enjoy what little time she could to have with him nowadays. Even if her definition of “spending time together’ was just having a leisurely stroll around town today, it was nice to do it with him. The weather was also perfect for a stroll. She didn’t hear anything about rain or storms happening today, just sunny weather with no clouds like it was right now. It wasn’t even windy; just a nice, simple breeze every once in a while.

“Where would you like to eat Russia?” (Name) asked him.

“Anything that is fine with you, da?” Russia said with his cute little smile that (Name) always liked to see. He always looked much sweeter than he already was when he smiled. Knowing that she could make her best friend happy made her even happier as well. She knew that he could be very sad sometimes because people always made fun of him and called him a psychopath. None of that was true, he wasn’t scary at all. At least not to her. In fact, she thought he was very adorable. He was nothing like what other people said about him, and when she thought about Russia being sad because of other people’s crude remarks, that just made her feel just as sad as he was. Sometimes those people really got to him, but (Name) knew him for who he really was and that was all that mattered to him. If it wasn’t for her, he didn’t know where he would be today.

Even behind his smile, (Name) could still tell that Russia was feeling a bit upset. Did someone say something to him in the conference room? That had to be it. What had happened to him this time?

(Name) walked in front of him, blocking his path. “Okay, what’s the matter Ivan?”

Russia stopped walking and looked down at her. How had she seen right through him so easily? Did she really know him that well? Well of course she did, she was his best friend after all. She had always been able to tell whether he was upset or not just by looking at him, no matter how hard he tried to hide it from her. He didn’t really want to be a burden to her, but he felt like he was doing just that whenever he got upset.

“U-um... Nothing really,” Ivan said, even though he figured that (Name) wouldn’t let that slide like he really was okay.

“Don’t say that it’s nothing Ivan,” (Name) said. “I know that you’re more upset than you’re letting on. Just tell me what’s wrong okay?” She looked back up at Russia with a concerned look in her eyes. “You’re my best friend Ivan. I hate seeing you so upset and feeling like I can’t do anything about it.”

“W-well...” Russia started off, casting his eyes downward more to his feet than anything else. “Everyone was staying as far away from me as possible today. Am I really that scary? “Is everyone really that terrified of me?” Russia’s eyes started to water over, as if he could break down into sobs at any moment.

(Name) stood on the tips of her toes and wiped the tears that started to fall from Russia’s eyes. “You’re not scary Ivan. Not at all.”

Ivan sniffled and wiped his face. “Y-you’re just saying that because we’re friends.”

(Name) shook her head. “No I’m not Ivan. I’m saying that because it’s true. I’ve never thought you were scary at all. Do you remember the day that we first met?”

Russia nodded. “I do. I remember it very well (Name).” He couldn’t help but remember the day that happened years ago when they were still children. The memory of it always made him happy and brought a smile to his face.

*FLASHBACK*

(Name) was playing around near the river like she normally did everyday. She was chasing a butterfly around the fields until she stopped, seeing a small boy standing alone by the edge of the river with no one but a yak to talk to, and he was indeed talking to it.

‘Why is he here all alone?’ (Name) thought as she started coming closer to him. ‘Doesn’t he have any friends?’

The little boy turned around, hearing tiny footsteps coming closer and closer to him. He saw a small girl, with (h/c) hair and (e/c) eyes. They boy started to just stare at the girl as she stood there staring back. He was half expecting for her to just run away after looking at him, just like everyone else he came in contact with. He couldn’t help that he looked scary sometimes, he just expressed his feelings differently from other people.

“Hi,” the little girl said to him after a moment.

“H-hello..” The little boy said back to her. “Don’t you find me scary?”

She gave him a puzzled look. “Scary? Why would I find you scary? I think you’re more adorable than scary,” the little girl said with a smile, making a slight pink blush appear across the boy’s face.

“Adorable?” Him adorable? No one except his sisters Ukraine and Belarus ever said anything like that to him. It actually made him feel a little better. He didn’t really feel anything but lonely and sad before, and now someone said he looked adorable. “You think I’m adorable?”

The little girl nodded and smiled at him. “Can I sit next to you?”

The boy didn’t know if he should let her be near him or not. He might just end up scaring her away anyway. What good would it be to start letting them be friends now when she might abandon him later?

The girl had already started to come closer to him, but he tried to side step as far away from her as possible until his foot slipped on a rock and he fell sideways into the river. He tried to reach for anything near the shore to grab onto, but the river had swept him too far away from the shore and he couldn’t get a good grip on anything. He tried to call out for help, but no one was there except the girl and the yak, and he really doubted that the yak would help or that the girl was fast enough to help him before he washed up somewhere else or drowned. He tried to keep his head above the water but the currents were strong and were already pulling him down. He could barely move his arms to fight back against the currents.

He was terrified, but then he started to notice that he would be missing if he really did drown. He started to calm down a little bit and just let the currents drag him along. He actually felt more at peace. He wouldn’t have to be picked on anymore. He wouldn’t have to be so sad now.

To his surprise, he saw the girl jump into the river and start to swim towards him. She didn’t seem to have as many struggles with the currents as he did. She swam until she got to him and held onto him as she reached for a branch hanging out of the side of the shore. She did her best to hold onto him and the branch as she struggled to pull him and herself to safety. The boy stayed as still as he could as the girl tried to get him to safety. Why was she helping him? Someone who deserved to be alone, someone who was disliked by everyone else?

The girl finally pulled hard enough to pull herself and the boy safely to shore. Both of them were crouched on the ground, catching their breath and trying to get themselves dry. When they had both recuperated from the experience they just had, the boy couldn’t help but look at the girl with a confused expression on his face. “Why did you save me?”

The girl sat down next to the boy and gave the same smile she gave to him before. “I didn’t want you to drown. I had to help you.”

“But you don’t even know me.”

“That doesn’t matter. I wouldn’t have let anyone drown like that.”

“B-but... I’ve always been alone. Everyone is scared of me and will hardly go near me at all.

“I’m not scared of you. I want to be your friend.”

The word ‘friend’ rung in the boy’s ears. It felt so unfamiliar yet comforting at the same time. He could hardly believe that this girl wanted to to be his friend. “Can we be friends?” The girl asked the boy.

“I suppose so.”

“What’s your name?”

“I-I’m Russia.”

“I’m (Name). Nice to meet you Russia.” (Name) extended her hand towards him, and he soon took it and held her hand in his own.

He finally had a friend. After begging for a friend for such a long time, he finally got one. He didn’t want her to leave. He wanted to be her friend forever and ever. “We’re going to become best friends right (Name)?”

“Of course Russia.”

*END OF FLASHBACK*

(Name) had saved his life on that day. She saw past all the bad things that other people were picking on him for and stayed with him up to this day. She cared for him no matter what. He honestly didn’t believe at first that she would stay with him for a long time and would just abandon him whenever she wanted. All of his doubts about her melted away long ago, and now he believed he had to courage to finally tell her something that he had wanted to say for a very long time.

“(Name), I like you. Much more than a friend ever could. I have liked you for a very long time actually.” A blush grew upon (Name)’s face while he was talking and confessing his feelings to her. “Will you please be my girlfriend (Name)?” By that time, Russia had already turned his face away from hers, preparing for both acceptance and rejection. He would be the happiest man in the world if she accepted him, but his heart would shatter into a million pieces if (Name) rejected him now.

To his great satisfaction, (Name) actually took his hand in her own and smiled up at him. “Yes Ivan, I’ll be your girlfriend.”

Russia smiled back at (Name) with the same cute smile she knew and loved ever since she met him, and a slight red blush on his cheeks. “So do you still think I’m adorable (Name)?”

(Name) let out a small giggle and stood on her tiptoes to kiss his cheek, making his face turn an even deeper shade of red. “Of course I do.”

That's so cute >w< But there's something bothering me : if Russia is the country of Russia in this story, and if the girl isn't a country, how is it possible that they met when they were children and are the same age now...?
